Why HEIC files don't open on Windows or Android

Apple introduced HEIC as the default iPhone camera format in 2017. It stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPG with the same visual quality — great for iPhone storage, frustrating for everyone else.

Windows requires a paid Microsoft Store extension to open HEICs natively. Most Android devices and web services simply reject them. Converting to JPG makes your photos universally compatible — email, social media, printing services, document editors — everything works with JPG.

Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format used by iPhones since iOS 11. It uses HEVC compression to produce files roughly half the size of JPGs at the same quality. The downside: Windows PCs and many Android devices cannot open HEIC files without a special codec or converter.

Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows or Android?

HEIC is an Apple format and is not natively supported by Windows or most Android devices. Windows 10/11 requires you to install the 'HEIF Image Extensions' from the Microsoft Store (which costs money). Converting to JPG is the easiest workaround — JPG works everywhere.

Are my iPhone photos uploaded to a server?

No. The converter uses a JavaScript library (heic2any) that runs entirely inside your browser tab. Your HEIC files are read from your device's memory and converted locally — nothing is transmitted over the internet.

Which output format should I choose?

JPG is the safest choice — it opens everywhere and produces small files. PNG is better if you need lossless quality (though HEIC photos don't have transparency, so this rarely matters). WebP produces the smallest files but requires a modern browser to view.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Yes. Drop multiple HEIC files into the converter and they will all be converted with the same settings. Download individually or as a single ZIP archive.

How do I stop my iPhone from saving photos as HEIC?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select 'Most Compatible'. This makes the camera save JPGs instead of HEICs going forward. It doesn't convert existing photos — use this tool for those.
